Résumé This study investigates the lexical and sub-lexical processing of Chinese characters in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong where the method of instruction of Chinese characters and the form of character used are different. Forty subjects from each place participated in a reading aloud task and an orthographic task. The results supported a new model of character processing and showed that the processing is different depending on how a reader learns to read.
